1937년, 올란두 시우바(Orlando Silva)가 부른 ’A Última Canção(마지막 노래)‘은 보사노바의 기원 앞에 놓인 노래라 할 수 있습니다. 당시에는 여전히 삼바와 라디오용 대중가요가 주류였지만, 이 곡은 속삭이듯 담담한 창법으로 후대 음악가들에게 특별한 전조처럼 다가왔습니다. 훗날 평론가들은 이를 “보사노바 이전의 보사노바”라 불렀습니다.

1950~60년대 리우데자네이루에서, 주앙 지우베르투(João Gilberto)의 절제된 기타와 목소리, 안토니우 카를루스 조빙(Antônio Carlos Jobim)의 정제된 화성, 실비아 텔레스(Sylvia Telles)와 나라 레앙 (Nara Leão) 의 목소리가 합쳐지며 보사노바는 비로소 자신만의 언어를 갖게 되었습니다. 바다와 도시, 사랑과 고독을 담은 노래들은 작은 방과 리우의 해변을 넘어 브라질 사회의 감수성을 새롭게 정의했습니다.

1970년대에 접어들며 보사노바는 또 다른 궤도로 나아갑니다. 토퀴뉴 (Toquinho), 카에타누 벨로주 (Caetano Veloso), 갈 코스타 (Gal Costa) 와 같은 음악가들은 보사노바의 뿌리를 이어받아 MPB(브라질 대중음악)와 교차시키며, 시대의 목소리를 확장시켰습니다. 이들의 음악은 보사노바가 남긴 숨결을 동시대의 언어로 다시 불러내는 작업이었습니다.

In 1937, Orlando Silva's song "A Última Canção (The Last Song)" can be seen as a precursor to the origins of Bossa Nova. While samba and popular radio tunes still dominated at the time, Silva's whispered, understated vocal style felt like a special omen to later musicians. Critics would eventually call it "Bossa Nova before Bossa Nova."

 

In Rio de Janeiro during the 1950s and 60s, Bossa Nova truly found its own voice with the combination of João Gilberto's restrained guitar and vocals, Antônio Carlos Jobim's refined harmonies, and the voices of Sylvia Telles and Nara Leão. These songs, capturing the essence of the sea and the city, love and solitude, moved beyond small rooms and Rio's beaches to redefine the sensibility of Brazilian society.

 

Entering the 1970s, Bossa Nova embarked on a different trajectory. Musicians like Toquinho, Caetano Veloso, and Gal Costa carried on Bossa Nova's roots, blending them with MPB (Brazilian Popular Music) and expanding the voice of the era. Their music was an effort to reintroduce the spirit of Bossa Nova in the contemporary language.
