— 사운드를 사유하는 실험실

 

라스터 노튼(Raster-Noton)은 1999년, 동독 켐니츠(Chemnitz)에서 성장한 세 아티스트, 카르스텐 니콜라이(Alva Noto), 올라프 벤더(Byetone), 프랭크 브렛슈나이더(Frank Bretschneider)가 각자 운영하던 Rastermusic과 Noton을 병합하며 출범했습니다. 이들은 전자음악을 장르적으로 접근 하기보다 사운드를 탐구하는 하나의 플랫폼으로 바라보았고, 지난 20여 년간 150여 개의 발매작을 통해 예술, 과학, 디자인이 교차하는 영역을 개척했습니다.

 

라스터 노튼의 작업은 종종 ‘글리치’나 ‘미니멀 테크노’로 불리지만, 본질은 음악적 규범을 해체하고 사운드 자체를 사유하는 태도에 있습니다. “Ton und Nichtton(사운드와 비-사운드)”라는 개념처럼, 음반뿐 아니라 포스터, 오브제, 설치, 공연으로 확장되며, 소리를 둘러싼 세계를 하나의 실험실로 재구성해왔습니다.

 

사운드는 컴퓨터의 오류 신호, 원시 데이터, 복제와 재처리의 과정을 통해 청각적 조각으로 변모합니다. Nicolai, Ikeda, Byetone, Bretschneider의 프로젝트는 각각 데이터, 대칭 구조, 리듬의 파편을 활용하여 소리를 개념적 매체로 확장했습니다. 투명한 패키징과 정밀한 디자인, 실시간 비주얼 시스템은 이들의 환원주의적 미학을 시각적으로까지 이어갔습니다.

 

2017년 Raster와 Noton으로 분리되었지만, Raster-Noton은 여전히 전자음악 역사에서 가장 영향력 있는 실험적 플랫폼 중 하나입니다. 그들의 작업은 “음악을 어떻게 만들 것인가”가 아니라, “사운드를 어떻게 바라볼 것인가”라는 질문을 던지며, 예술과 과학, 데이터와 감각의 경계를 넘나드는 사운드 실험으로 기능해왔습니다.

 

8월 24일 틸트는 Raster-Noton의 아카이브로 다시 채워집니다. 높은 해상력과 입체적인 음장 속에서 펼쳐질 이들의 정교한 소리 입자는, 그들이 가장 선호했던 가이타인(Me-Geithain) 스피커를 통해 구현되며, 라스터 노튼 아티스트들의 관점에서 모니터링할 수 있는 드문 청취 경험으로 다가올 것입니다.

Raster-Noton was launched in 1999 through the merger of Rastermusic and Noton, labels originally run by three artists who grew up in Chemnitz, East Germany: Carsten Nicolai (Alva Noto), Olaf Bender (Byetone), and Frank Bretschneider. Rather than approaching electronic music by genre, they viewed it as a platform for exploring sound itself. Over the past two decades, they have released over 150 works, pioneering a field that intersects art, science, and design.

 

While Raster-Noton's work is often categorized as 'glitch' or 'minimal techno,' its essence lies in an attitude of deconstructing musical norms to contemplate sound itself. This is embodied in their concept of "Ton und Nichtton" (sound and non-sound), which extended beyond records to posters, objects, installations, and performances, reconfiguring the world surrounding sound into a laboratory.

 

Sound is transformed into auditory sculpture through processes involving computer error signals, raw data, and cycles of replication and reprocessing. The projects of artists like Nicolai, Ryoji Ikeda, Byetone, and Bretschneider expanded sound into a conceptual medium by utilizing data, symmetrical structures, and rhythmic fragments. Their reductionist aesthetic was further extended visually through transparent packaging, precision design, and real-time visual systems.

 

Although the label split back into Raster and Noton in 2017, Raster-Noton remains one of the most influential experimental platforms in the history of electronic music. Its work posed the question not of "how to make music," but of "how to perceive sound," functioning as a sonic experiment that traversed the boundaries between art and science, data and sensation.

 

Tonight, Tilt is filled with the Raster-Noton archive. Presented in high resolution and an immersive sound field, the artists' meticulously crafted sound particles will be realized through their preferred ME-Geithain speakers, offering a rare listening experience monitored from the perspective of the Raster-Noton artists themselves.
