1989년 영국 셰필드에서 시작된 Warp Records는 지난 30여 년간 전자음악의 새로운 언어를 제시해온 가장 영향력 있는 독립 레이블 중 하나입니다. 디트로이트 테크노와 시카고 하우스, 그리고 셰필드의 산업적 유산에서 비롯된 ‘블립 & 베이스(Bleep & Bass)’ 사운드로 출발한 Warp는, 초창기부터 일반화된 댄스 트랙을 넘어선 청취의 음악(listening music)을 실험해왔습니다.
 
1992년의 전설적인 컴필레이션 ‘Artificial Intelligence’는 이러한 전환점을 상징합니다. 클럽을 넘어 가정에서의 몰입적 감상을 제안하며, Aphex Twin, Autechre, The Black Dog 등 지금도 살아 있는 이름들을 세상에 각인시켰습니다. 이 흐름은 흔히 IDM(Intelligent Dance Music)이라 불리지만, Warp가 지향한 것은 구분을 명명할 장르명이 아니라 음악을 듣는 태도 자체의 확장이었습니다.
 
Warp의 역사는 곧 아티스트 중심성과 실험 정신의 역사이기도 합니다. Aphex Twin의 괴이한 천재성, Autechre의 수학적 추상성, Boards of Canada의 아날로그적 향수, Squarepusher의 재즈적 충돌 등, 서로 다른 미학이 하나의 공동체 안에서 공존할 수 있었습니다. 또한 Designers Republic의 시각 언어와 Chris Cunningham의 영상은, Warp가 음악을 넘어 문화 전반으로 경계를 확장했음을 보여줍니다.

Founded in Sheffield, England in 1989, Warp Records is one of the most influential independent labels of the last three decades, having presented a new language for electronic music. Starting with the 'Bleep & Bass' sound that emerged from Detroit techno, Chicago house, and Sheffield's own industrial heritage, Warp has experimented from its early days with "listening music" that goes beyond conventional dance tracks.
 
The legendary 1992 compilation, 'Artificial Intelligence', symbolizes this turning point. It proposed an immersive listening experience for the home rather than the club, and in doing so, etched now-legendary names like Aphex Twin, Autechre, and The Black Dog into the world's consciousness. This movement is often called IDM (Intelligent Dance Music), but Warp's aim was not to name a new genre, but to expand the very attitude of listening to music itself.
 
Warp's history is also a history of artist-centricity and a spirit of experimentation. The eccentric genius of Aphex Twin, the mathematical abstraction of Autechre, the analog nostalgia of Boards of Canada, and the jazz-like collisions of Squarepusher—all these different aesthetics were able to coexist within a single community. Furthermore, the visual language of Designers Republic and the videos of Chris Cunningham show how Warp expanded its boundaries beyond music and into the wider culture.
 
And today, this music takes on a new life in the special listening environment of Tilt. Tilt's sound system, with its high resolution and spatial audio, makes it possible not just to hear, but to physically feel the sound. Here, Warp's complex and experimental sounds will be delivered tangibly through the air and vibrations.
