‘각자에게 그의 몫을’이라는 라틴어 문장을 이름으로 삼은 Suum Cuique(수움 쿠우쿠)는 마일스 휘태커(Miles Whittaker)의 개인 프로젝트입니다. 이 이름은 프로듀서로서의 정체성과 실천을 가감 없이 드러내는 선언에 가깝습니다.
컴퓨터, 시퀀서, MIDI, 그리고 모든 동기화 장치를 거부하며, 아날로그 장비와의 물리적 접촉만으로 만들어진 이 음반은 음악이라기보다 한 편의 오디오 실험에 가깝습니다. 오작동하는 테크노, 포탄처럼 터지는 음향의 공백, 불협화음의 밀도 높은 질감. 마일스 휘태커는 이 모든 ‘결함’을 의도적 구조로 전환합니다.
Ascetic Ideals는 드럼머신과 신디사이저가 자동적으로 생성하는 불완전한 사운드를 그대로 수용하며, 편집 없는 실시간 믹싱, 때로는 의도하지 않은 우연까지 모두 수렴합니다. 이는 제작자의 개입이 최소화된 상태에서 기계가 스스로 ‘소리의 깊은 어둠’을 드러내도록 허락하는 작업입니다.
앨범의 음향은 마치 깊은 지하의 저장고, 드러나지 않던 본능의 층위에서 흘러나오는 숨결처럼 무겁고 건조하며, 익숙한 음악적 구조를 완전히 거부합니다. 완결을 유보한 채, 그저 사운드라는 사건이 감각 위를 지나가도록 방치합니다.
청취자는 이 앨범에서 감각의 가장 거친 표면과 마주합니다. Ascetic Ideals는 귀를 자극하는 것이 아니라, 그 청취 자체가 하나의 물리적 불안으로 침투되기를 요구합니다.

Suum Cuique의 Ascetic Ideals는 음악이라는 완성된 구조를 거부하고, 청취자가 ‘소리의 경계선’에 머무는 경험으로 이끕니다.
이제 음악은 더 이상 형태를 갖춘 예술이 아닌, 기계와 공간 사이에서 자율적으로 발생하는 하나의 사건으로, 청취는 그 사건에 감각적으로 반응하는 실천으로 전환됩니다.

Suum Cuique – Ascetic Ideals
— The Machine's Breath, the Boundary of Order and Collapse
Suum Cuique, a Latin phrase meaning "to each his own," is the solo project of Miles Whittaker. The name is akin to a declaration, unapologetically revealing his identity and practice as a producer.
Rejecting computers, sequencers, MIDI, and all synchronization devices, this record, created solely through physical contact with analog equipment, is less music and more an audio experiment. Malfunctioning techno, sonic voids that explode like cannonballs, the dense texture of dissonance—Miles Whittaker transforms all these "flaws" into an intentional structure.
Ascetic Ideals embraces the imperfect sounds automatically generated by drum machines and synthesizers, incorporating unedited real-time mixing and even unintended accidents. It is a process that allows the machine itself to reveal the "deep darkness of sound" with minimal intervention from the creator.
The album's sound is heavy and dry, like a breath flowing from a deep underground storage vault, from a layer of previously unrevealed instinct, completely rejecting familiar musical structures. It suspends completion, simply allowing the event of sound to pass over the senses.
On this album, the listener confronts the roughest surface of sensation. Ascetic Ideals does not aim to stimulate the ear, but demands that the act of listening itself permeates as a form of physical unease.
A Listening Proposal from Tilt
In August, Tilt explores the "Structure of Sensation" through three keywords: "Infrathin," "Sublime," and "Simulacra."
Suum Cuique's Ascetic Ideals rejects the finished structure of music and leads the listener to an experience of dwelling on the "borderline of sound."
Here, music is no longer an art form with a defined shape, but an event that autonomously occurs between machine and space. Listening is transformed into a practice of sensorially responding to that event.
