— 로버트 존슨의 마지막 날, 델타의 종언
 
‘로버트 존슨(Robert Johnson)’의 ‘If I Had Possession Over Judgment Day’는 종말과 사랑, 신의 심판과 사적인 욕망을 한 무대에 올려놓는 곡입니다.
 
“만약 내가 심판의 날을 지배할 수 있다면, 내가 사랑하는 여인에게 기도할 권리조차 주지 않겠다.”
 
그는 신화적, 종말론적 이미지를 통해 사랑의 집착과 상실의 고통을 드러내며, 신의 권능마저 사적인 감정의 무게 아래 끌어내립니다.
 
이것이 델타 블루스의 방식이고, 거대한 사건을 가장 인간적인 욕망과 결핍 속으로 끌어와, 그 경계에서 노래합니다.
 
틸트가 델타 블루스를 다루는 이유도 여기에 있습니다. 이 음악은 장르적 유산이기 이전에, 땅속 깊이 묻힌 기억과 기록되지 못한 삶의 흔적, 그리고 여전히 사라지지 않은 울림이 살아 있는 감정의 지층이기 때문입니다.
 
지난 7월, 틸트는 ‘땅 아래로부터 올라온 노래들’ 델타 블루스 큐레이션을 통해 낡고 긁힌 음질 속에서 되살아나는 감정을 청취했습니다. 델타의 오래된 소리 속에서, 사라진 목소리가 오히려 더욱 또렷하게 다가왔습니다.
 
8월 16일, 그 지층 위로 다시 한 이름이 소환됩니다. 로버트 존슨. 1938년 이날, 그는 세상을 떠났습니다. 그것은 한 인물의 죽음이자, 델타 블루스가 사망 선고를 받은 날이었습니다. 이후 블루스는 살아남았지만, 같은 호흡으로는 다시 숨 쉬지 못했습니다.
 
틸트는 이 날을 기점으로 블루스 음악가 김대중에게 기획을 부탁했습니다. 그는 한국 독립음악 씬에서 전통 블루스를 기반으로, 한국의 포크와 가요 정서를 결합해 자신만의 블루스를 구축해 온 음악가입니다.
 
“진정한 슬픔을 음악에 구현하고 싶다”는 그의 말처럼, 그는 블루스를 통해 삶의 질곡을 담담히 기록하는 연주자입니다.
 
그의 시선이야말로 ‘델타의 사망선고일’을 현재 한국에서 다시 불러낼 가장 적확한 방식이라 판단했습니다.
 
김대중은 이 제안에 응했고, 헌정의 형식을 넘어 기록으로 남을 기획을 준비했습니다. 그것은 한 번의 무대가 아닌, 기억의 지층 위에 새겨질 하나의 장면이 되도록.

If I Had Possession Over Judgment Day
— The Last Day of Robert Johnson, The End of the Delta
 
Robert Johnson's "If I Had Possession Over Judgment Day" brings apocalypse, love, divine judgment, and personal desire onto a single stage.
 
"If I had possession over Judgment Day, I wouldn't even grant the woman I love the right to pray."
 
Through mythical and eschatological imagery, Johnson reveals the obsession of love and the pain of loss, pulling even the power of the divine down to the weight of his personal feelings.
 
This is the way of the Delta blues: to draw monumental events into the most human desires and deficiencies, and to sing from that boundary.
 
This is also why Tilt engages with the Delta blues. Before it was a genre-defining legacy, this music was a geological stratum of emotion—a repository of deeply buried memories, traces of unrecorded lives, and a resonance that still lingers.
 
This past July, through our "Songs from Under the Ground" Delta blues curation, TILT listened to the emotions that came alive within the old, scratched sound quality. In the aged sounds of the Delta, the vanished voices became, paradoxically, even clearer.
 
On August 16th, another name is summoned back to this stratum: Robert Johnson. On this day in 1938, he passed away. It was the death of an individual, and the day the Delta blues was pronounced dead. The blues survived, but it never breathed the same way again.
 
Marking this day, Tilt asked blues musician Kim Dae-jung to curate an event. In the Korean independent music scene, he is a musician who has built his own unique style of blues by combining traditional blues with the sentiments of Korean folk and popular music.
 
As he says, "I want to embody true sorrow in my music," he is a performer who calmly chronicles the hardships of life through the blues.
 
We determined that his perspective was the most fitting way to revisit "the day of the Delta's death sentence" here in present-day Korea.
 
Kim Dae-jung accepted the proposal and has prepared a project that goes beyond a simple tribute to become a lasting record—not just a one-time performance, but a scene to be etched onto the strata of memory.

• Part 1 (approx. 70 min)
  A listening session of Robert Johnson's music, selected by blues musician Kim Dae-jung. Between the songs, he will calmly unfold the times and scenes that these songs hold.
• Part 2 (approx. 50 min)
  A live performance with acoustic guitar and voice. Kim Dae-jung's own songs, along with some of Robert Johnson's lesser-known, hidden gems, will resonate anew.

This day of listening and performing is not a memorial, but a record.
From the edge of the Korean peninsula to the Delta, we will trace the lingering reverberations of the blues together.
