로럴 헤일로(Laurel Halo)는 동시대 전자음악에서 가장 정의하기 어려운 작곡가이자 프로듀서입니다.

그녀는 장르의 경계를 해체하고, 감정보다 분위기(atmosphere), 구조보다 감각의 흐름에 집중하며
소리를 통해 기억과 장소, 무의식의 지형도를 구축해 왔습니다.

2023년 발표된 Atlas는 그녀의 음악적·철학적 여정이 가장 정제된 형태로 응축된 작업입니다.

팬데믹 시기 “어디에도 속하지 못한 장소감”에 대한 반응으로 탄생한 이 앨범은, 실재하지 않는 공간들을 위한 사운드 환경으로 설계되었습니다.

앨범은 피아노 즉흥연주를 중심축으로, 루시 레일턴(Lucy Railton)의 첼로, 벤딕 기스케(Bendik Giske)의 색소폰, ‘제임스 언더우드(James Underwood)’의 바이올린, 코비 세이(Coby Sey)의 보컬 등의 연주가 겹겹이 더해집니다.

이 사운드들은 파리 Ina-GRM 스튜디오에서 전자적 처리 과정을 거치며 어쿠스틱과 디지털, 실내악과 앰비언트 사이의 경계를 흐리는 안개 같은 매트릭스로 정리됩니다.

이 앨범에서 청취자는 명확한 구조나 감정의 언어를 따르기보다는, 슬픔과 평온, 불안과 황홀함이 스며드는 정서의 층위 속에 머무르게 됩니다. 청취의 흐름은 꿈처럼 비선형적이고, 직관적인 감각을 따라 흘러갑니다.

8월, Tilt는 ‘감각의 구조’를 세 개의 키워드 ‘인프라신, 서브라임, 시뮬라크르’로 나누어 탐색합니다.

Laurel Halo의 Atlas는 이 중 특히 ‘분위기와 감각의 층위가 구성되는 방식’에 주목하는 작업입니다.

감정이 아닌 기류처럼 퍼지는 분위기, 구조가 아닌 몽상의 흐름 속에서 청취자는 하나의 감각적 환경에 잠시 머무는 존재로 거듭납니다.

Tilt는 이 앨범을 통해 감각이 논리보다 먼저 작동하는 방식, 그리고 사운드가 하나의 투명한 공간을 설계할 수 있다는 가능성을 함께 듣고자 합니다.

— A Listening Environment for Places That Don't Exist

 

Laurel Halo is one of the most difficult-to-define composers and producers in contemporary electronic music.

 

She dismantles the boundaries of genre, focusing on atmosphere over emotion and the flow of sensation over structure, constructing topographies of memory, place, and the unconscious through sound.

 

Released in 2023, Atlas is a work in which her musical and philosophical journey is condensed into its most refined form.

 

Born as a response to the "sense of placelessness" felt during the pandemic, this album is designed as a sound environment for spaces that do not actually exist.

 

The album is centered around piano improvisations, layered with performances by Lucy Railton on cello, Bendik Giske on saxophone, James Underwood on violin, and Coby Sey on vocals.

 

These sounds were electronically processed at the Ina-GRM studio in Paris, organized into a fog-like matrix that blurs the lines between acoustic and digital, chamber music and ambient.

 

Within this album, the listener is invited to dwell within layers of emotion where sorrow and tranquility, anxiety and ecstasy seep in, rather than following a clear structure or emotional language. The flow of listening is non-linear, like a dream, drifting along with intuitive sensations.

 

Atlas is composed not of songs but of an environment, not as a final product but as an experience. Within it, we do not so much "listen" to music as we capture the subtle tremors of the moment sensation awakens.

Through this work, Laurel Halo proposes the atmosphere created by sound itself as a listening structure.

In August, Tilt explores the "Structure of Sensation" through three keywords: "Infrathin," "Sublime," and "Simulacra."

 

Laurel Halo's Atlas is a work that particularly focuses on "the way atmosphere and sensory layers are constructed."

 

In an atmosphere that spreads like a current rather than an emotion, and in a flow of reverie rather than structure, the listener is reborn as a being who temporarily resides in a sensory environment.

 

Through this album, Tilt hopes to listen together to the way sensation operates before logic, and the possibility that sound can design a transparent space.
