세명의 음악가 김일두, Engelr Hashim, 김창희가 함께 만든 ‘I AM NOT I’는 음악이 존속할 수 있는 가장 위태로운 경계에서 이루어진 음향적 실험입니다.

이 앨범은 김일두가 오랫동안 이어온 포크의 서정성과 록의 직접성을 넘어, 피드백과 노이즈라는 불안정한 물질성 속에서 전개된 급진적 자기 해체의 기록입니다. 이때 가사와 음계는 더 이상 중심축이 아닌, “복잡하고 이해하기 어려운 피드백”을 불러내는 물리적 트리거에 불과합니다.

‘I AM NOT I’의 리뷰어 M3g는 이 앨범을 J.G. 발라드의 문제의식과 나란히 읽습니다. 발라드가 ‘Crash’에서 지적했듯, 현대 사회는 허구가 현실을 압도하고 대체하는 지점에 놓여 있습니다. ‘I AM NOT I’의 소리는 이 지점에서 남겨진 잔여적 울림, 곧 “허구가 가릴 수 없는 현상의 자투리들”을 드러냅니다.

8월, Tilt는 ‘감각의 구조’를 세 개의 키워드 ‘인프라신, 서브라임, 시뮬라크르’로 나누어 탐색합니다.

‘I AM NOT I’는 감각이 감당할 수 없는 지점에서 발생하는 소리의 압도적 현상을 기록합니다. 피드백과 노이즈는 통제 불가능한 힘으로서 안정된 구조 대신 파편과 공허, 그리고 순간의 희열을 남깁니다.

Tilt는 이 앨범을 통해, 버크가 말한 ‘서브라임’의 감각적 한계와 마주하는 청취의 순간을 제안합니다. “나는 내가 아니다”라는 제목은 곧 자아의 경계를 흔드는 질문이 되고, 청취는 불가피하게 압도와 경외의 감각으로 우리를 이끕니다.

— An Experiment in Feedback and Deconstruction

Created by the trio of musicians Kim Ildu, Engelr Hashim, and Kim Changhee, I AM NOT I is a sonic experiment conducted on the most precarious boundary of music's existence.

This album transcends the folk lyricism and rock directness of Kim Ildu's long-standing career, serving as a record of radical self-deconstruction that unfolds within the unstable materiality of feedback and noise. Here, lyrics and scales are no longer the central axis but merely physical triggers for evoking "complex and incomprehensible feedback."

Reviewer M3g draws a parallel between I AM NOT I and the thematic concerns of J.G. Ballard. As Ballard pointed out in Crash, modern society has reached a point where fiction overwhelms and replaces reality. The sound of I AM NOT I reveals the residual resonance left at this juncture—the "fragments of phenomena that fiction cannot hide."

The essence of this album lies in the incomprehensible noise born from improvisational interaction, the emptiness wrought by ennui and trial and error, and the moments of ecstasy that rarely resonate within it. It is an attempt to document phenomena as they are, rather than to construct an interpretable structure. It can also be read as a paranoid obsession to reawaken numbed emotions.

Instead of a stable narrative, I AM NOT I uses deconstructed fragments and unpredictable affective responses to lead the listener to confront their own sensory limits. The title itself poses the ontological question, "I am not I," through sound, transforming the very act of listening from one of safe comprehension into a threatening event. This album is a rare work that constitutes such a field of dangerous listening.

A Listening Proposal from Tilt

In August, Tilt explores 'The Structure of Sensation' through three keywords: 'Infrathin, Sublime, and Simulacra.'

I AM NOT I records the overwhelming phenomenon of sound that occurs at a point beyond sensory capacity. Feedback and noise, as uncontrollable forces, leave behind fragments, emptiness, and moments of elation instead of a stable structure.

Through this album, Tilt proposes a moment of listening that confronts the sensory limits of what Burke called the 'sublime.' The title "I am not I" becomes a question that shakes the boundaries of the self, and the act of listening inevitably leads us to a sense of being overwhelmed and of awe.
