핀란드 전자음악의 선구자 ‘미카 바이니오(Mika Vainio)’가 20세 무렵 활동했던 프로젝트 ‘가가린 콤비나앗띠 (Gagarin Kombinaatti)’의 기록이 30여 년 만에 세상에 공개되었습니다.

1980년대 초, 투르쿠의 지하실에서 그는 버려진 고철, 드릴, 해머, 라디오 노이즈를 도구 삼아, 스로빙 그리슬(Throbbing Gristle)과 초기 아인슈튀어첸데 노이바우텐(Einstürzende Neubauten)을 연상시키는 원시적이고 거친 사운드를 빚어냈습니다.

카세트에 담긴 로파이 질감 속, 날카로운 노이즈, 차가운 드럼 패턴, 바람 부는 듯한 앰비언스는 훗날 판소닉(Pan Sonic)과 솔로 작업으로 이어질 바이니오 음악의 원형을 이미 품고 있습니다. 장비의 성능이 아닌, 소리의 물리적 특성과 다루는 태도에 주목한 그의 관점이 이 시기부터 명확히 드러납니다.

— Revealing the origins of Mika Vainio,
　an excavated record from the Finnish underground.

 

The recordings of Gagarin Kombinaatti, a project by the pioneer of Finnish electronic music, Mika Vainio, from when he was around 20 years old, have been released to the world after more than 30 years.

 

In the early 1980s, in a basement in Turku, he used discarded scrap metal, drills, hammers, and radio noise as his tools to craft a primitive and coarse sound reminiscent of Throbbing Gristle and early Einstürzende Neubauten.

 

Within the lo-fi texture of the cassettes, the sharp noise, cold drum patterns, and windy ambiance already contain the blueprint for Vainio's music that would later evolve into Pan Sonic and his solo work. His perspective, focused not on the performance of the equipment but on the physical properties of sound and the attitude in handling it, is clearly evident from this period.

 

Although it was a project that ended after a single performance, "83–85" is an acoustic fault line that reveals the depths of Vainio's art. The sophisticated ideas hidden within its aggression and brutality prove that even the absence of emotion can become a powerful sentiment.
