Eric Holm – Andøya

London-based American sound artist Eric Holm focuses on the physical vibrations and resonances created by objects and environments, rather than traditional instruments.

 

His debut album, Andøya, was created from sounds collected from a single telegraph pole on the remote Norwegian island of Andøya, located in the Arctic Circle. By attaching contact microphones to the high-voltage wires connecting a military communications base, he captured the subtle vibrations and electrical noise generated by the harsh winds and the power lines themselves.

 

Here, the telegraph pole acts as an intersection where the snowfields, the wind, and a vast human-made network meet—a "witness" testifying to all of it. The album's soundscape, crafted from the low-frequency hum of power lines, sharp high-frequencies, static, and friction, pushes the listener into a state of isolation amidst the overwhelming force of nature.

 

Tilt hopes this album becomes a cold, sublime listening experience that reveals the essence of a place and its unseen narratives through sound.

Eric Holm's Andøya is re-examined through the lens of the "Sublime"—a listening experience that confronts the overwhelming environment and the limits of sensation.

 

Based on the subtle vibrations and electrical resonances captured from a telegraph pole on a remote Arctic island, this album exposes the immense tension created by the interplay of nature and technology.

 

As cold low-frequencies and sharp high-frequencies intersect, the listener is confronted with a sense of isolation and awe that looms beyond the sound.
