영국 브리스톨의 듀오 엠티셋(Emptyset)은 소리의 물질성과 그것이 공간과 맺는 관계를 탐구하며, 청취를 감각의 한계까지 밀어붙입니다. 제임스 긴즈버그(James Ginzburg)와 폴 퍼거스(Paul Purgas)는 사인파, 백색 소음, 왜곡과 같은 최소 단위의 음향을 출발점으로 삼아, 그것이 특정 환경 속에서 변형·붕괴되는 과정을 기록합니다.
버려진 맨션이나 폐쇄된 발전소 같은 물리적 공간은, 그 자체로 소리를 변형시키고 의미를 갱신하는 능동적 주체로 작동합니다. 그 공간이 되돌려주는 응답은 불규칙하며, 예측 불가능한 질서와 혼돈의 경계에서 청각적 압도를 만들어냅니다.

Emptyset – Collapsed [2012]
The Bristol-based duo Emptyset explores the materiality of sound and its relationship with space, pushing the act of listening to the limits of sensation. James Ginzburg and Paul Purgas start with minimal sonic units such as sine waves, white noise, and distortion, and record their process of transformation and decay within specific environments.
Physical spaces, like abandoned mansions or decommissioned power plants, become active agents that transform sound and renew its meaning. The responses these spaces return are irregular, creating a sense of auditory inundation at the boundary of unpredictable order and chaos.
The EP Collapsed, released on Raster-Noton, is a crucial example of this experimentation brought into the context of galleries and clubs. Its unstable rhythmic structures and sonic framework, perpetually on the verge of collapse, confront the listener with disorder. Emptyset's Collapsed is re-examined at the intersection of "Sublime" overwhelming and collapse, where order and chaos meet.
This work transforms minimal sonic units like sine waves, noise, and distortion within space and structure, creating unpredictable tension and precarity.
Instead of stable rhythms or complete structures, the listener stands at the limit of their senses within a sonic framework that is constantly threatening to fall apart. Tilt hopes this experience moves beyond discomfort, allowing for a contemplation of the sublime moment when order dissolves.
