드론 메탈 밴드 Sunn O)))의 창립자 스티븐 오말리(Stephen O’Malley)와 실험적 작곡가 앤서니 파테라스(Anthony Pateras)의 협업은, 각기 다른 사운드 철학이 부딪히며 새로운 감각의 지형을 만들어냅니다.

이번 앨범 ‘Sept duos pour guitare acoustique & piano préparé(어쿠스틱 기타와 프리페어드 피아노를 위한 일곱 개의 이중주)’는 전자음 없이 오직 어쿠스틱 기타와 프리페어드 피아노만으로 구성되며, 모든 것이 오버더빙 없이 실시간으로 연주됩니다.

‘파테라스’는 피아노 내부에 오브제를 삽입해 타악기적이고 예측 불가능한 음색을 만들어내고, ‘오말리’는 슬라이드와 개방현의 배음을 통해 서서히 진동하는 하모닉 필드를 구축합니다.

이 작업은 전통적인 박자와 구조를 배제하고, 선형적 흐름 대신, 두 악기 사이의 미세한 긴장과 공명이 주도하는 섬세한 청취 환경이 조성됩니다. 청취자는 예측 가능한 리듬을 따르기보다, 그 안에서 발생하고 소멸하는 소리의 순간들에 집중하게 됩니다.

음향적 여백과 감각의 미세한 진동, 무너진 시간 속에서 청취자는 ‘듣는다’는 행위 그 자체를 다시 경험하게 됩니다.

— Between Silence and Resonance, a Record of Devout Listening

 

The collaboration between Stephen O’Malley, founder of the drone metal band Sunn O))), and experimental composer Anthony Pateras creates a new sensory landscape where distinct sound philosophies collide.

 

This album, Sept duos pour guitare acoustique & piano préparé (Seven duos for acoustic guitar & prepared piano), is composed solely of acoustic guitar and prepared piano without any electronic sounds, and everything is performed in real-time with no overdubs.

 

Pateras inserts objects inside the piano to create percussive and unpredictable timbres, while O’Malley builds a slowly vibrating harmonic field through the overtones of slides and open strings.

 

This work eschews traditional rhythm and structure. Instead of a linear flow, it fosters a delicate listening environment driven by the subtle tension and resonance between the two instruments. The listener is prompted to focus on the moments of sound as they emerge and decay, rather than following a predictable rhythm.

 

What is "deep listening"? How is the "act of listening" possible? This album poses these fundamental questions between silence and resonance.

A Listening Proposal from Tilt

In August, Tilt explores the "Structure of Sensation" through three keywords: "Infrathin," "Sublime," and "Simulacra."

Amidst the acoustic voids, the subtle vibrations of sensation, and a collapsed sense of time, the listener re-experiences the very act of "listening."

 

Through this work, Tilt invites you to listen together to the sensory fissure between sound and silence, and the intimate communion that blossoms within it.
