영국 브리스톨 출신의 작곡가 롤리 포터(Roly Porter)는 클럽 문화의 심장부에서 출발했지만, Aftertime을 통해 사운드의 보다 근원적인 층위로 이동합니다. 덥스텝 듀오 Vex’d(백스트)에서 체득한 압도적 음향 경험을 발판 삼아, 그는 이 데뷔 앨범에서 리듬과 서사의 틀을 해체하고, 청취 그 자체의 조건을 재구성합니다.

Aftertime은 비트의 중심을 제거한 채, 녹음된 어쿠스틱 소스를 급진적으로 변형하고 재조합해 독자적인 음향 세계를 구축하는데, 거대한 서브베이스의 압력과 금속성 마찰음, 블랙홀처럼 삼켜 들어가는 리버브는 단지 듣는 것을 넘어, 청취자의 감각을 우주의 외연으로 확장시키는 물리적 경험을 형성합니다.

앨범의 트랙명은 프랭크 허버트의 SF 서사 듄(Dune)에 등장하는 행성들에서 차용되었으나, Aftertime이 구성하는 청각적 세계는 추상적 서사보다 존재론적 사운드의 밀도에 가까운 공간입니다. 그 안에서 시간은 흐르지 않고 압축되며, 음악은 진행되지 않고 정지된 채 파동처럼 울려 퍼집니다.

이러한 극한의 환경 속에서 온데 마르테노(Ondes Martenot)의 선율이나 현악기의 잔향은 잔혹한 황량함과 서정적 아름다움이 교차하는 지점을 형성합니다. 이 충돌은 감정의 해석을 유예한 채, 청취자 스스로가 감각의 균열에서 의미를 발견하도록 이끕니다.

8월, Tilt는 ‘감각의 구조’를 세 개의 키워드 ‘인프라신, 서브라임, 시뮬라크르’로 나누어 탐색합니다.

Roly Porter의 Aftertime은 감각의 가장 미세한 틈에서 작동하는 음악적 실천으로 조명됩니다. 이 앨범은 감정을 직접적으로 전달하지 않고, 의미와 감각 사이의 미묘한 진동, 정서와 물리 사이의 ‘얇은 막’을 구성합니다. 압도적인 음향 구조와 서정적인 선율의 충돌 속에서, 청취자에게 감각의 문턱에 머무는 상태로 이끕니다.

— The Condition of Sensation, Listening After the Story

 

Hailing from Bristol, UK, composer Roly Porter began his journey in the heart of club culture, but with Aftertime, he shifts to a more fundamental layer of sound. Building on the overwhelming sonic experiences he mastered as part of the dubstep duo Vex'd, he deconstructs the framework of rhythm and narrative in this debut album, reconfiguring the very conditions of listening itself.

 

Aftertime removes the centrality of the beat, instead building a unique sonic world by radically transforming and reassembling recorded acoustic sources. The immense pressure of sub-bass, metallic friction, and reverb that swallows sound like a black hole creates a physical experience that goes beyond mere listening, extending the listener's senses to the outer reaches of the cosmos.

 

The album's track titles are borrowed from the planets in Frank Herbert's sci-fi epic Dune, but the auditory world constructed by Aftertime is a space closer to the density of ontological sound than to an abstract narrative. Within it, time does not flow but is compressed; music does not progress but resonates like a wave while standing still.

 

In this extreme environment, the melodies of the Ondes Martenot or the reverberations of strings form a point of intersection between brutal desolation and lyrical beauty. This collision suspends emotional interpretation, guiding the listener to discover meaning in the fissures of sensation for themselves.

 

Aftertime does not impose any emotion, nor does it complete any story. Instead, this sonic structure leaves a question:

What are we listening to, and how far can that listening extend?

In August, Tilt explores the "Structure of Sensation" through three keywords: "Infrathin," "Sublime," and "Simulacra."

 

Roly Porter's Aftertime is highlighted as a musical practice that operates in the finest gaps of sensation. The album does not convey emotion directly but constructs a "thin membrane" between meaning and sensation, between emotion and physicality. Amidst the clash of overwhelming sonic structures and lyrical melodies, it leads the listener to a state of dwelling at the threshold of sensation.

 

Tilt experiments with how listening functions as a structure of sensation within these small vibrations, these minor tremors, these ultimately unresolved reverberations.

 

Aftertime is a work that reminds us that the very act of standing on that boundary is listening.
